What is Muga silk?
Muga silk is the rarest natural silk in the world. It is produced exclusively in the state of Assam in northeastern India, spun by a semi-wild silkworm called Antheraea assamensis, and it possesses a natural golden lustre that cannot be reproduced artificially. No dye, no treatment, no industrial process has ever replicated it. The golden warmth you see in a length of Muga silk is simply what it is — chemistry, biology, and place, combined.
The name comes from the Assamese word meaning "amber" or "golden" — an entirely apt description. Unlike white mulberry silk, which begins with no colour and accepts dye, Muga is already the colour it will always be. That colour deepens and becomes richer with every wearing. It is one of the very few materials on Earth that improves without intervention.
The Antheraea assamensis silkworm
The silkworm responsible for Muga silk is Antheraea assamensis, a species that lives semi-wild in the forests of the Brahmaputra valley. Unlike the domesticated mulberry silkworm (Bombyx mori), which has been bred for industrial production over millennia and cannot survive outside a controlled environment, Antheraea assamensis exists in something closer to its natural state. It feeds on the leaves of certain trees — predominantly Som (Persea bombycina) and Soalu (Litsaea polyantha) — which grow in the specific climatic and soil conditions of Assam.
This biological specificity is precisely why Muga cannot be mass-produced. The silkworm will not thrive elsewhere. Attempts to cultivate it in other Indian states and in other countries have consistently failed to replicate the quality or quantity achieved in Assam's river valley. The terroir of silk, if you will, is as real as the terroir of wine.

Geographic exclusivity: only Assam
Assam holds a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for Muga silk — a legal designation that recognises its origin as inseparable from its identity. This places Muga alongside Champagne, Parmigiano-Reggiano, and Darjeeling tea: things that can only be authentically themselves when they come from one specific place. No amount of technological sophistication can substitute for the Brahmaputra valley's particular combination of altitude, humidity, temperature variation, and forest ecology.
The state produces roughly 2,000 metric tonnes of all types of silk per year. Of that, Muga accounts for approximately 150–200 tonnes — a fraction of what mulberry silk producing states generate, and nothing compared to global silk output. Genuine Muga from Assam is, by any honest measure, among the most limited luxury natural fibres in the world.
Physical properties of Muga silk
Muga silk has several physical properties that distinguish it sharply from other natural silks:
- Natural golden colour. The warm amber-gold tone is produced by the natural sericin coating of the fibre. No other silk has this colouration without dye.
- Lustre that deepens with age. The sericin in Muga silk is more durable than in mulberry silk. Rather than washing away, it bonds further with the fibre over time, creating an increasingly lustrous surface. This is why well-cared-for Muga stoles passed down through generations are more beautiful than new ones.
- Exceptional tensile strength. Muga fibres are among the strongest of any natural silk. A Muga stole, properly cared for, will outlast most other textile objects in a wardrobe by decades.
- Natural UV resistance. The chemical composition of Muga fibroin provides a degree of natural UV protection not found in other silks, which contributes to its resistance to fading.
- Thicker, more textured hand. Compared to the smooth uniformity of mulberry silk, Muga has a slightly more textured, substantial feel — a quality weavers describe as "alive." It drapes with weight and authority.
How Muga silk is made: from forest to finished stole
The journey of Muga silk from forest to finished object is one of the most labour-intensive processes in the textile world. It begins in the trees.
Rearing. Silkworm eggs are obtained from carefully maintained seed stocks and hatched in controlled conditions. The larvae are transferred to host trees — Som or Soalu — where they feed for four to five weeks, passing through five instar stages before beginning to spin their cocoons. During rearing, they must be protected from predators, parasites, and disease. Traditional rearers in Assam have developed elaborate knowledge systems for this, passed down across generations.
Cocoon harvest. Once the silkworm has spun its cocoon and begun pupation, the cocoon is harvested before the moth emerges (which would break the continuous filament). Selection is rigorous — only cocoons meeting size, weight, and colour standards proceed to reeling.
Reeling. The cocoon is softened in warm water to loosen the sericin binding the fibre. The reeler then locates the filament end and draws it out, combining several cocoon filaments into a single thread. A single cocoon can yield a continuous filament of up to 1,500 metres. This process is done by hand, with the reeler controlling tension and consistency through experience alone.
Spinning and degumming. The reeled silk is twisted into yarn of the appropriate weight for weaving. Some sericin is removed to allow dyeing, but in natural Muga the sericin is partially retained — this is what gives it that golden tone and durability.
Warping and weaving. The weaver prepares the loom by setting the warp threads — a process that alone can take half a day for a stole. Then the weaving begins, shuttle pass by shuttle pass, at a rate of perhaps four to six inches per hour on a complex pattern. For a stole of 200cm, this means five to eight days of continuous work.
Finishing. The woven stole is checked, pressed by hand, and inspected before it is accepted. The fringes are finished. The certificate is prepared. Then it is packaged.
Muga silk vs mulberry silk
Mulberry silk is the world's most commercially produced silk, accounting for over 90% of global silk output. The comparison with Muga reveals very different objects serving different purposes:

Muga silk vs Tussar silk
Tussar silk (also called Tasar) is another wild Indian silk, produced by Antheraea mylitta and other species across Jharkhand, Bihar, and West Bengal. It is also handwoven, also carries a natural warm colour, and is also artisanally valuable. The key differences:
Tussar is more widely available than Muga and produced in larger quantities. Its natural colour is a warmer, earthier beige rather than Muga's golden amber. It has a somewhat coarser texture and a more matte surface — beautiful in its own way, but different in character. It does not share Muga's property of deepening lustre with wear. Bhagalpur is historically famous for both Muga and Tussar weaving, and both traditions are worthy of preservation. But Muga, by virtue of its rarity and its unique ageing properties, occupies a category of its own.
How to identify genuine Muga silk
With Muga's value comes the inevitable market for imitation. Here is how to identify the genuine article:
- The natural golden sheen. Genuine Muga has a warm, self-lit golden lustre that is immediately distinctive. No dyed silk matches it exactly — dyed imitations look flat or brassy by comparison.
- The texture. Muga has a slightly more textured, denser hand than mulberry silk. It feels substantial, not slippery.
- The sound. When rubbed together, authentic silk — including Muga — produces a soft, dry rustle sometimes called "scroop." Synthetic fabrics do not produce this.
- The burn test. A few fibres from a genuine Muga stole will char, smell faintly of burning hair (protein), and leave a crushable ash. Synthetic fibres melt, bead, and smell of burning plastic.
- The GI tag. Authenticated Muga from Assam may carry a Silk Mark certification or GI tag issued by the Silk Mark Organisation of India. Ask for documentation when purchasing.
- The weave. Handwoven Muga under a loupe shows slight natural irregularities in the weave — evidence of a human hand. Machine-woven imitations are perfectly uniform.

How to care for Muga silk
Muga silk is durable by natural fibre standards, but it deserves careful attention to realise its potential for longevity. The following care routine will ensure your stole deepens rather than diminishes over years of wear:
- Washing. Hand wash in cool to lukewarm water with a very gentle, pH-neutral soap — or use a dry cleaner experienced with wild silks. Never machine wash. Never use biological detergents, bleach, or fabric softener.
- Drying. Do not wring. Press flat between clean dry towels and reshape while damp. Dry in shade, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
- Ironing. Iron on the lowest silk setting, always with a pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric. Steam can be used with care, but test on an inconspicuous area first.
- Storage. Fold loosely and store in acid-free tissue paper inside a fabric bag or box. Avoid plastic, which can trap humidity. Keep away from direct light, which can affect the natural sericin over very long periods.
- Wearing. Wear it. Muga silk benefits from contact with the skin — the natural oils of the body contribute to the deepening of the lustre over time. A Muga stole that is worn regularly and cared for will be noticeably more beautiful at ten years than it was at one.
